About the workshop

Motion and Stillness is derived from Shion’s choreographic practice of integrating calligraphy. This open-level all ages workshop provides a fun, welcoming learning experience that generates community connection. Participants will be guided through an introductory lesson in Japanese calligraphy leading into an improvised movement practice, where participants embody the brushstrokes of their calligraphy piece. Shion will guide with scores and intentions to connect the mind and body, while exploring a traditional art form from a contemporary perspective.

About Shion (she/they)

Through choreography hybridized with heritage art forms and language that interacts with digital and sculptural objects, Shion’s work activates spaces through performances that navigate the complexities of the body’s internal and external worlds. Shion has performed their work across Canada, including presentations at The Dance Centre (Vancouver), Tangente (Montréal), Kinetic Studio (Halifax), and Art Gallery of Ontario. Their dance films have been screened at festivals globally, including Dancing On The Edge Festival and Capsule in Canada, International Portrait Film Festival in Bulgaria, and Dance Days Chania in Greece. Shion is the grateful recipient of the Dance Centre’s Iris Garland Emerging Choreographer Award and Dance Victoria’s Chrystal Dance Prize.
