Impromptu is exactly that: one week of studio space for choreographers to research and share a sketch of an idea at Morrow — with a minimum honorarium of $1,200. Unlike Odd Meridian’s other paid residences, Impromptu does not have dedicated project funds; therefore opportunities are infrequent and reserved for choreographers interested in building long-term relationships with Odd Meridian through their work as artists and/or in production and administration roles.
Calder White and Allie Lang are the first artists we’ve been able to support in this way and we hope that there will be more Impromptu opportunities to come.
“Tracing the unreliability and poetics of memory, Emma and I look to Javanese mythology, epigenetics, and three conflicting oral histories of our great-grandfather’s execution as a resistance fighter during the Japanese occupation of Indonesia to guide the initial research for this work.” — Allison Lang

“I spent my residence at Morrow crafting ‘only child’, a solo iteration of a group work I choreographed in 2022, in preparation for its premier at DanceWorks in Toronto in June 2025. The work uses life-sized puppets and dance theatre to explore themes of reproduction, idolatry of partnership, and the lengths we will go to avoid loneliness. This residency provided critical time, space, and funds to synthesize the existing piece into a new framework, and I left Morrow knowing more about the choreographic structure, the lighting design, and the scenic elements of the work. Thank you OM ♡” — Calder White
