The thing I like about dance is that we get to spend a lot of time together, and we get really close because of it.

But then it has to end and people disperse. Sometimes really far away.

Like my friend Fleur, she went to the Netherlands.

But then I got to visit her.

BIO

Kaya Tsurumi is an emerging contemporary dance artist who grew up on Kwikwetlem First Nations territory (Coquitlam, BC). She is interested in improvisation and considering the many ways dance can be enjoyed. Her interests have led her to dance for Sidra Bell Dance New York, Shion Skye Carter, Sarah U and Eilish Shin-Culhane. In 2022, Kaya created her first dance film, Peace Piece which screened in F-O-R-M Festival and Branch Collective’s Dance Onscreen. She will premiere a new dance film in F-O-R-M’s 2024 commissioning program. Kaya received her formative training from Arts Umbrella including their Post-Secondary Program, and subsequently continued her dance education at Modus Operandi.
